INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the Deer Avenger 4 demo. What a game this is! Playing as Bambo, our hero, you will be stalked by the hunters and it will take some real strategy and cunning on your part to eliminate them all without getting eliminated yourself. To assist you in this battle of nature vs man, you can use the game's many new, cool features including Atomic farts (harms any hunter who is touched by the amazing shock waves), Booster farts (a quick way to get around -- let it rip and hang on for deer life!), three different tracking devices (compass, motion tracker and acoustic sensor), mounds of dirt and twigs (that you can hide in to surprise the hunters), lots of powerful weapons and skill points that you earn with each kill to enhance Bambo's strengths and abilities. So, be sure to read through this short manual in order to learn about all the features of the game. And thenàsee if you can defeat every hunter and fill your trophy wall. If you can get all 12 hunters ( 2 in the demo version), you will have beat Deer Avenger 4. Happy hunting!
INSTALLATION
You will need Directx 7a (minimum) installed to run Deer Avenger 4 Demo. If you don't have at least Directx 7, you can download the latest Directx version from Microsoft's web site at:
http://www.microsoft.com/directx
RUNNING DEER AVENGER 4
After you have installed Deer Avenger 4, you can run it by double-clicking on the Deer Avenger 4 desktop icon or by choosing Deer Avenger 4 from your Start/Programs menu.
When you start Deer Avenger 4, a dialog box will appear asking for three pieces of information:
1st box: Player name - Enter your name to create a new game, or, if you have any previously saved games, you can click on the arrow to see all saved games and then click on the game you want to play.
2nd box: Graphics Driver - If you have more than one Direct 3d compatible display device available you may select it here.
3rd box: Screen Resolution - Select a screen resolution. (NOTE: To make the program fill your entire screen, be sure to choose a resolution that has FULL SCREEN after it.) The higher the screen resolution, the better the game will look, but the more demanding it will be on your system. Low-end machines should run under lower screen resolutions for optimal game performance. If you're not sure, choose a resolution and if the game plays too slowly or the graphics don't look good, exit the game and return, choosing a different resolution. Experiment to find what works best for your system.
HUNTING
Watch out! The hunters will try to kill you - it's your job to get them first. As you move around the areas, you will see fart power-ups (taco meal bags, bowls of chili, broccoli, and hot dogs), scopes, batteries, and tracking devices. Walk through an item to pick it up. When you pick up a scope, tracking device, a battery or a fart powerup it will be immediately useable. You will also see toilet paper, campfires, beer cans and other signs that hunters have been in that location recently. You can't pick up these items, but these are good places to use your calls (F8 key.)
When you first enter a hunting area no hunters will be around. Eventually, they will appear. You can make them appear more quickly by using your hunter calls (F8 key). You can also lure hunters to a specific spot by throwing out a lure (F7 key). Once a hunter enters the hunting area, you will hear him or her. Listen carefully - the sound will come from the direction of the hunter. To help track the hunters, you can use your tracking devices (F6 key), if you've outfitted Bambo with one in the cave. You can also hide in the dirt and brush mounds (F5 key when you're near a mound) you'll see all around. This will allow you to stalk the hunters. Of course, you can use any farts you pick up (key F1 to F4).
It's nature vs man - the oldest story in the book. So, be careful!
Hunting Controls:
When you're in the hunting area, you will use the mouse to orient yourself in a direction and you will use the arrows to control Bambo's movement.
Up Arrow: Run forward
Shift + Up Arrow: Walk forward
Down Arrow: Walk backward
Left Arrow: Strafe left
Shift + Left Arrow: Strafe and walk left
Right Arrow: Strafe right
Shift + Right Arrow: Strafe and walk left
Right Ctrl: Arm/Holster weapon
R: Reload weapon
Left Click: Fire weapon
Right Click: Use/exit scope mode (if you have a scope)
You can use keys in conjunction with one another, too. For example, press the Up and Left arrows simultaneously to strafe diagonally left and forward at the same time, or the Up, Left and Shift key to make Bambo strafe while walking diagonally to the left. You can also holster/arm your weapon while walking, running, or strafing.
To Quit the game from the hunting screen, press the ESC key.
Hunting Interface
At the bottom of the hunting screen is a tool bar. Here is what each tool does:
Farts (F1 - F4): When you start the game, Bambo has no farting power. To obtain farts, pick up strategically placed taco meals, bowls of chili, broccoli and hot dogs. Run over these objects to charge your farting power - each object will give you one fart. If you run over more than one broccoli, for example, you will be able to do multiple broccoli farts - one for each broccoli you picked up. To use a fart, press the associated function key. There are four types of farts:
F1 - Broccoli: This is a Magnet fart. It attracts hunters to Bambo.
F2 - Taco Hut Extreme Meal: This is a Tracking fart. It moves in the direction of any hunter. Where it goes, you should go to find a hunter.
F3 - Bowl of Chili: This is an Atomic fart. This is similar to a shot of a weapon because it harms any hunter's health if you are close enough to the hunter.
F4 - Perro de Diablo: This is the Booster fart, a very special propulsion system that can propel Bambo to a new location in the world very quickly.
F5 - Hide: When you move near a mound of dirt and branches, the Hide icon will become highlighted. At that point, hitting F5 will enable Bambo to hide in the mound. He can take out his weapon and wait for a hunter to come nearby, not knowing Bambo is laying in wait. (HINT: Place a lure out in front of the mound first - that'll make a hunter come nearby.)
F6 - Tracking devices (Motion Tracker and Acoustic Sensor): turns unit On or Off. If you have equipped Bambo with a tracking device, this icon will be highlighted. These devices can help you to find a hunter more quickly.
F7 - Bag: In the bag are a number of lures. Hit F7 to throw a lure and attract hunters. Retrieve a thrown lure by running or walking over it before your prey reaches it first.
F8 - Call: A call coaxes a hunter out of hiding. To use a call, simply hit the F8 key. But don't use too many calls or else hunters will be scared away! Tip: Do not stand still while using calls. Your best bet is to do a call and then move to a new location and do another call. The absolute best time to do a call is when you are near the droppings of hunters (for example, toilet paper, campfires, and empty beer cans).
At the top of the hunting screen are the following items of interest:
Health meter (Top left of screen)
The antlers display Bambo's current health. When Bambo gets shot, he will lose some health - the color will partially drain from the antlers. Over time, his health will be restored but if he loses all his health, he will die and you will have to start over.
Compass/Motion Tracker/Acoustic Sensor (Top right of screen)
One of these items will appear on the screen. You will always start hunting with the compass. If you have equipped Bambo with one of the other devices and you turn it on, that device will replace the compass. Here is some information
on each item:
Compass - works just like a standard compass
Motion Tracker - When hunters are in the world and moving an icon will appear on the display of this device signifying the hunter's location. Zoom in and out of the viewing area with the plus and minus keys.
Acoustic Sensor - When hunters are in the world and either speaking, shooting, or moving an icon will appear on the display temporarily. Zoom in and out of the viewing area with the plus and minus keys.
NOTE: The Motion Tracker and Acoustic Sensor require battery power so make sure to turn off these units when not in use. To restore the unit to full power, find a battery in the hunting area and pick it up.
TROUBLESHOOTING
First and foremost, be sure to have the most recent driver installed for your video card. Deer Avenger 4 requires many of the hardware accelerated features of 3d video cards and accelerators, and many outdated drivers do not have these features properly implemented, even if the card is capable.
If you would like to play the game in a window, but only fullscreen modes are available in the display mode selection box, make sure your desktop color depth is set to 16 bits (also known as "High Color").
In some cases, running other applications while playing the game may cause problems. Try closing all open programs before starting Deer Avenger 4 Demo.
